How to make a strong portfolio to get more clients in freelancing

In 2017, I have started my freelancing career.  From my experience, I realize the importance of a strong portfolio. A strong portfolio is 50% responsible for getting a new project. This is true for getting orders in the freelance marketplace and outside the marketplace.

Today, I will share how I built a strong freelance portfolio. At the same time, I am willing to share how my strong portfolio helps me to get regular freelance jobs.

I am a web developer. But, no tension. My tips will be helpful for all the freelancers.

Well, let’s learn how to create a strong portfolio.

The starting

A portfolio is a way to show your skills and expertise. The problem is, we all follow a general format. But, a portfolio should be unique, otherwise why a random person will hire you for their projects?

So, follow my rules to create a unique portfolio. At the same time, this article will help you to get more clients from building your strong portfolio.

I will talk about only 7 points from my experience.

  1. Don’t be robotic – Tell the story, not a description. – in your portfolio, try to connect, don’t be robotic
  2. Establish your social media presence
  3. Talk about your education and experiences.
  4. Tell the story behind the project.
  5. Don’t forget to share your achievements.
  6. Include mentions and testimonials.
  7. Keep your portfolio updated

These 7 points were helpful for me, and I can assure you that, these will help you a lot.

Don’t be Robotic:

A portfolio should be engaging. This is the easiest way to connect with your buyer.

If a buyer gets confident in your portfolio, obviously he/she will hire you! So, how can you make them confident?

It’s easy! In your portfolio, share your experience like a story. See, everybody makes an introduction, then talks about their services, and shows reasons why they are perfect.

Don’t write you are the best. Instead of writing you are the best you can share your real-life experience. If you have no previous real-life experience, then you can show your practice work. You can tell the story behind this project.

Well, let me be more clear.

I never wrote that, I have more than 7 years of experience. However I share the specific number of my successful projects, show them my previous projects, and also share the case studies.

It helps them to be connected with my work. Eventually, I got the benefit.

Establish your social media presence

Believe me, your social media presence can help you to get a lot of buyers. It will help you to make your portfolio more strong!

Here are the steps that you can take to make your social media presence and benefit from these activities:

  • Share random posts about your profession. You can do it 3-4 times in a week.
  • Join different groups that are related to your profession. Make posts and comments on those groups.
  • Join niche-specific business groups related to your skills. Share your experience and also try to make regular comments.

All these things will help you to connect with different people. In this way, you can build a strong image in your field. This will eventually help to make a strong freelance portfolio. At the same time, you will get more new buyers.

Talk about your education and experiences.

Assume that, you are a graphics designer. You have practical knowledge, you have previous experience, and you can make stunning designs. These all are good.

But, if you have a certificate from any university in graphics design, it will help your buyer to get a better idea about you.

At the same time, your experience is always valuable. If you have experience working with any reputed company, then this experience will help you to get more buyers in the future.

So, always talk about your education as well as your experiences.

Tell the story behind the project:

Don’t show your experiences rather tell them the story. Yeah, don’t show, but tell your story!

You might be asked, why am I telling this?

Well, if you share a screenshot or link, the buyer will click on that image or visit your provided link. And that’s the end.

But, if you tell the story behind the projects or if you share the client’s requirements and how you completed the task according to their requirements, it will be more beneficial to get your next order.

Because this is the right way to show your experience.

Don’t forget to share your achievements:

Share your regular achievements on your social media platforms. You can share the case study after completing a successful project. If you get a promotion in the marketplace you also can share that. At the same time, you can add your best achievements to your portfolio page.

It will help you to improve your impressions. At the same time, a new client will get more confident about you.

Include mentions and testimonials:

In this digital world, we are always checking for reviews before buying anything, right? The same thing happens for the buyers.

If you add your testimonial to your portfolio, your impression will be increased a lot. And the chance will be high to get your next project.

You also can share review videos or mentions from your previous buyers. It is also very helpful to impress a new client.

Keep your portfolio updated:

The last thing I would say, your profile should be updated regularly.

Most of the freelancers, create their portfolio, and then never edit or update it. They just share the same portfolio with everyone. But don’t do this.

You are improving regularly. Your experiences also increase day by day. Your portfolio is a medium to show your expertise. So, don’t wait to keep it updated.

Let’s start right now!

All these things are helpful to improve your portfolio quality as well as it will help you to get more clients!

A strong portfolio can help a person to get a job, either a freelancing project or an office job.

So, don’t wait to follow these tips. It will help you both in the short-term and long-term. By following these tips, you can create a strong portfolio. At the same time, it’s one kind of passive marketing. So, it will eventually help you to get more freelance projects.

Good day!
